Barb Hamilton-Hinch, Assistant Professor, Leisure Studies is this years (2011) recipient of the Student Appreciation Award. It is awarded at our annual Convocation Brunch by SAHHPer (students nominate and vote) and recognizes the outstanding contribution of a faculty member in making the student experience at Dalhousie more enjoyable and rewarding.  

 

    

Dr. Jerry Singleton will be inducted into the Academy of Leisure Sciences (ALS) at the National Recreation and Park Association Conference in Atlanta. He will be inducted into ALS at their annual luncheon and business meeting scheduled for noon Wednesday, November 2, 2011 in Atlanta, GA (held in conjunction with NRPA).

Dr. Jerry Singleton, Leisure Studies Professor, was awarded the prestigious Dr. Gonzaga Da Gama Memorial Award at this years Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association  Conference on May 25, 2011 in Whistler, BC.

  

        

 

Dr. David Westwood, Kinesiology Professor with the School of Health and Human Performance was a Sport Leader for the 2011 Canada Games. Dalnews article.

 

     

 


 
   
HIV Now: A History in the Making was presented on December 1, 2010, World AIDS Day at Dalhousie University in Ondaatje Hall in front of over 350 guests. The lecture was sponsored by the Dalhousie chapter of CANFAR (Canadian Association for AIDS Research) with presenter
Matthew Numer, Health Promotion Instructor, School of Health and Human Performance.

Training for Sports 
September 2010 - Training for sports provides a healthy form of exercise. Jo Welch wants to know what factors contribute to participation in sport by adults who are of non-traditional age. Her Honours students, Emma Saaltink and Hilary Caldwell, are investigating how a lifetime of training for water sports affects overall health, including bone status.

Raising Vitamin D levels
May 2010 - Dr. Jo Welch is testing the ability of the UV-B phototherapy lamp to raise vitamin D levels and also if the use of the lamp improves blood glucose control in people with pre-diabetes. Anyone interested in becoming a subject in this study should contact Dr. Welch at
