RECREATION & LEISURE STUDIES
Vision
To provide exceptional opportunities for students to develop the skills necessary to be leaders in research, theory and practice in the fields of recreation management, therapeutic recreation, and leisure studies in Atlantic Canada, nationally and abroad.
Mission Statement for Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies
To provide opportunities, such as courses, internships, linkages with campus and community programs, and study abroad programs, that support students in acquiring a critical, in-depth understanding of the importance of recreation and leisure in diverse societies. These are also designed to promote the role of recreation and leisure as an integral component of health and wellbeing across the lifespan. Included in our aim is our intention be the Atlantic Region’s leader of research addressing current issues of concern for the recreation and leisure studies field and to provide opportunities for students to engage in research processes that will inform practitioners and theorists over the next decade.
In today’s society, balance in life is more important than ever. Recreation and Leisure Studies gives our students the tools to help bring that balance to a population more in need of it than ever. Focusing on improving the quality of life at any age or stage and serving the community, our graduates are leaders in the health and wellness community.
With two distinct undergraduate programs, students can focus on either Therapeutic Recreation or Recreation Management, achieving national certifications and gaining practical experience through a 14-week internship in their final year. Graduate students in Leisure Studies will continue their educational journey focusing on theoretical concepts and practical delivery of leisure across the lifecourse, supervised by nationally and internationally recognized faculty, acknowledged for their contribution to this growing field.
